About This Experience
Knossos is the largest Bronze Age site on Crete and the ceremonial heart of Minoan civilisation, and it is also one of the hardest ancient sites in Greece to read on your own. Signage is thin, much of what you photograph is Arthur Evans' early-20th-century reconstruction rather than original fabric, and the layout genuinely earns its reputation as a labyrinth. This 1.5-hour walking tour puts a licensed guide beside you for exactly that reason.
Your guide takes you through the West Court and the great storerooms, the Throne Room with its gypsum seat, the Grand Staircase of the residential quarter, and the frescoed corridors that made the palace famous. Along the way you get the archaeology as well as the myth: how the first palace rose soon after 2000 BC, was levelled by earthquake around 1700 BC and rebuilt larger, and why the complex finally declined in the 14th century BC.
The €20 general-admission ticket is included and you enter through the skip-the-line channel, which matters between 10:00 and 11:00 when the coach parties from Heraklion port arrive together. Group sizes are capped — 8, 15 or 22 people depending on the option you choose — and a headset is provided whenever the group is larger than six, so you can hear the commentary in the open courts. Two optional add-ons are worth knowing about: round-trip pickup from central Heraklion, and a 90-minute guided visit to the Heraklion Archaeological Museum at 13:30, where the original frescoes and Minoan treasures from this site are actually kept.
