Elounda to Knossos Palace: Bus, Car, Taxi and Tour Guide
Knossos is about 75 to 80 km from Elounda, roughly 1 hour 15 minutes by car or 2.5 to 3.5 hours by bus with two changes. Compare car, bus, taxi and pickup tours, with a Knossos and museum day plan.
Knossos Palace works well as a full-day trip from Elounda, but getting there by public transport takes more planning than from nearby Agios Nikolaos. The palace is about 75 to 80 km away by road, which is around 1 hour 10 to 1 hour 20 minutes by car depending on traffic and where your hotel is. There is no direct bus: you ride from Elounda to Agios Nikolaos, take the KTEL intercity bus to Heraklion, then the city bus out to Knossos, so allow 2.5 to 3.5 hours each way. That is why many visitors staying in Elounda drive, take a taxi or private transfer, or book a tour with hotel pickup. The bus is still the cheapest option, especially if you travel alone. Whichever you choose, pair Knossos with the Heraklion Archaeological Museum to get the most from the journey.

Elounda to Knossos at a glance
| Option | Typical one-way time | Best for | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rental car | ~1 hr 10–20 min | Flexible travellers | Driving and parking |
| Taxi/private transfer | ~1 hr 10–20 min | Families, couples, groups | Higher cost |

Driving is the fastest way, at roughly 1 hour 15 minutes. By public transport you change in both Agios Nikolaos and Heraklion, so plan on 2.5 to 3.5 hours one way.
How far is Knossos from Elounda?
Elounda lies just north of Agios Nikolaos on Crete’s eastern side, and Knossos sits on the southern edge of Heraklion. The road distance is about 75 to 80 km, depending on the route and your exact accommodation, and the drive takes roughly 1 hour 10 to 1 hour 20 minutes in normal conditions.
That makes Knossos a full day out from Elounda, but the drive itself is comfortable.
Is there a direct bus from Elounda to Knossos?
Normally, no. The public-transport route is:
Elounda → Agios Nikolaos → Heraklion → Knossos
- Local KTEL bus from Elounda to Agios Nikolaos
- Intercity KTEL bus from Agios Nikolaos to Heraklion
- Heraklion city bus to Knossos
You can do it in one day, but the two changes add a lot of time.
Elounda to Agios Nikolaos by bus
KTEL Heraklion–Lasithi runs regular buses between Elounda and Agios Nikolaos through the day in summer, and the ride takes around 30 minutes. Times change between seasons and some days have extra departures, so check the current timetable with KTEL Heraklion–Lasithi (ktelherlas.gr, +30 2810 245020) or at the bus stop before you plan the day.
Agios Nikolaos to Heraklion by bus
The second leg runs more often. Buses between Agios Nikolaos and Heraklion run from early morning until late evening, roughly every hour for much of the day. The hard part is lining up the two legs so you are not left waiting in Agios Nikolaos.
Heraklion to Knossos by bus
In Heraklion, change to the city bus for Knossos, usually shown as Line 2 Knossos/Skalani. The official Knossos visitor information puts the ride at around 20 minutes. Allow extra time for walking between stops, waiting, buying a ticket and finding the right connection.
How long does Elounda to Knossos take by public transport?
Expect around 2.5 to 3.5 hours one way, depending on connections. You may connect quickly, or you may wait a long time in Agios Nikolaos and again in Heraklion. Either way, the bus takes more than twice as long as driving.
Can you do Elounda to Knossos by bus in one day?
Yes, but it is a long day. A realistic bus day includes:
- 5 to 7 hours of travel in total
- 1.5 to 2 hours at Knossos
- optional time at the museum
- lunch
- waiting at stops
If saving money matters most, it works. If you want the most from one holiday day, a car, a taxi or an organised tour usually suits you better.
Best public-transport strategy
1. Take the earliest practical Elounda bus
Aim to reach Agios Nikolaos as early as you can.
2. Connect to Heraklion
Catch a morning intercity bus.
3. Continue to Knossos
Take the Heraklion city bus out to the palace.
4. Visit the museum afterwards
You pass back through Heraklion anyway, so stop at the Archaeological Museum on the way home.
5. Check the last comfortable return connection before you leave Elounda
You need enough time for Heraklion → Agios Nikolaos → Elounda on the way back. Do not leave the final connection to chance late in the evening.
Elounda to Knossos by car
For most independent travellers, driving is the best option. Allow around 1 hour 10 to 20 minutes in normal traffic. The route runs:
Elounda → Agios Nikolaos → west towards Heraklion → Knossos
Advantages
With a car you can:
- reach Knossos early
- skip two bus changes
- leave when you want
- visit the museum
- stop for lunch
- drive back at your own pace
Main disadvantage
It is a fairly long driving day if you also spend several hours sightseeing. Even so, you save a lot of time compared with the bus.
What time should you leave Elounda?
In summer, leave around 06:30 to 06:45 if you want to reach Knossos close to its 08:00 opening. The early start gets you cooler temperatures, fewer crowds, less risk of a midday heat closure and plenty of time for the museum.
Best driving itinerary
A good summer day:
- 06:30: leave Elounda
- 07:45–08:00: arrive at Knossos
- 08:00–10:00: visit Knossos
- 10:15–10:45: drive into Heraklion
- 11:00–13:30: Archaeological Museum
- 13:30–15:00: lunch
- 15:00–16:30: central Heraklion
- 16:30–18:00: drive back to Elounda
You see the palace, the original finds and the city without rushing any of them.
Is the drive difficult?
Most confident drivers find the route manageable. The most stressful part is usually the traffic around Heraklion; the open road from Elounda is easier. Use navigation and allow extra time.
Is there parking at Knossos?
Yes. The official visitor information lists parking among the site’s facilities. Arrive early and parking is easier, and you walk the site before the worst of the heat.
Elounda to Knossos by taxi
A taxi is the easiest door-to-door option. It suits couples, families, groups, older travellers and anyone who does not want to drive. The journey takes about as long as driving, around 1 hour 10 to 20 minutes depending on traffic.
How much does a taxi cost?
Taxi prices change and depend on your exact hotel, whether you pre-book, traffic, waiting time and whether you agree a fixed transfer price or use the meter. Ask for a quote before you travel. Split between several people, the cost per person can be reasonable.
One-way taxi and bus back
This can be a good compromise. Take a taxi early from Elounda to Knossos, then come back by bus:
Knossos → Heraklion → Agios Nikolaos → Elounda
You get an early arrival with no morning changes, pay less than for a return private transfer, and can stop at the museum on the way. The downside is the long bus journey home in the evening.
Private transfer vs taxi
A private transfer is usually pre-booked at a fixed price. It helps if you want a confirmed pickup, a fixed return time, a child seat, a larger vehicle or simply less uncertainty. Taxi and transfer services overlap a great deal, so compare the total price, whatever the service is called.
Organised Knossos tours from Elounda
Elounda is a major resort area, so Knossos excursions that collect from here are easy to find. They can include hotel pickup, coach or minibus transport, the Knossos visit, a licensed guide or a tour escort, free time in Heraklion and an optional museum visit. From Elounda they make particular sense because they remove the awkward bus connections.
The Heraklion: Knossos Palace, Zeus Cave & Oil Mill Private Tour lists Elounda and Agios Nikolaos among its pickup points and is rated 5.0/5 from 22 reviews. From $129, a local driver-guide takes you by private van to Knossos, the Cave of Zeus on the Lasithi Plateau and an olive mill. The €20 Knossos entry and the €15 Zeus Cave entry are paid separately, and a guide inside the palace is optional, so add one if interpretation matters to you. The private Cave of Zeus and Knossos trip from Elounda covers a similar route with a guide and snacks on board, but costs from $417 and has only seven reviews (5.0/5), so treat its rating with caution.
If you would rather drive yourself and meet a guide at the gate, the 90-minute skip-the-line guided walking tour costs from $100, includes the €20 admission and a licensed guide, and is rated 4.9/5 from more than 1,500 reviews. Our guide to which Knossos tour is right for you compares the rest.
What to check before booking
Is the €20 Knossos ticket included?
The current official full admission is €20. Some tours leave it out of the price.
Is there a licensed guide?
A transport excursion and a guided archaeological tour are different products. If you want the site explained, check for a licensed guide at the palace.
How long do you spend at Knossos?
Look for at least 90 minutes, and ideally 1.5 to 2 hours.
Is the museum included?
“Heraklion” in an itinerary may only mean free time in the city.
How long is the hotel pickup route?
A coach that collects guests from several resorts can add a lot of time to the day.
Organised tour vs rental car
Choose a car if:
- you want control over the day
- you are comfortable driving
- you want an early start
- you want to decide how long to stay in Heraklion
Choose a tour if:
- you do not want to drive
- you want hotel pickup
- a guide matters to you
- you prefer one booking for the whole day
Public bus vs organised tour
A tour saves more effort from Elounda than from Heraklion, because the bus needs two changes before Knossos. Even on a tight budget, compare the bus fares, the total journey time, the tour price, the value of a guide and the convenience of hotel pickup. Your time is part of the cost.
Should you visit the Heraklion Archaeological Museum too?
Yes. If you travel all the way from Elounda, the museum makes the journey far more rewarding.
At Knossos you see:
- the palace architecture
- the courts
- the storage areas
- the reconstructed spaces
At the museum you see:
- the original fresco fragments
- figurines
- pottery
- jewellery
- Minoan writing
- ritual objects
The two sites work best together.
How long do you need?
Knossos
1.5 to 2 hours
Museum
About two hours
Lunch and Heraklion
1 to 2 hours
A complete day from Elounda takes roughly 9 to 11 hours, depending on how you travel.

Best time to visit from Elounda
In summer, go early. The 08:00 to 10:00 window is the best time to be on site: the palace is almost entirely outdoors and gets very hot later in the day.
Heat closures
During extreme heat, Knossos can close for part of the day. On 26 August 2026 the site closed from 12:00 to 17:00. That is one more reason to make Knossos your first stop.
Is Knossos worth visiting from Elounda?
Yes, if you are interested in archaeology, Minoan civilisation, Greek mythology or ancient history. Knossos is far enough from Elounda to need a full day, but close enough that the journey is reasonable.
What if you only want a half-day?
By private car or taxi, a half-day is possible:
- 06:30: leave Elounda
- 08:00–10:00: Knossos
- 10:00–11:30: drive back
That is a lot of travel for one site, though. We would usually add the museum or an afternoon in Heraklion.
Knossos vs Spinalonga from Elounda
The two excursions are very different.
Knossos
Best for:
- archaeology
- Bronze Age history
- mythology
Spinalonga
Best for:
- island scenery
- Venetian and Ottoman history
- the history of the leper colony
- a boat trip
If you have only one free day in Elounda, choose by interest. Spinalonga is much closer and easier to reach; Knossos is the better choice for ancient history.
Knossos vs Malia Palace from Elounda
Malia Palace is much closer to Elounda than Knossos and far less reconstructed.
Choose Malia if you want:
- a shorter journey
- quieter archaeology
- a lower ticket price
Choose Knossos if you want:
- the most famous Minoan palace
- the mythology
- a larger site
- an easy museum combination
If you love archaeology, visit both on different days. Our Knossos vs Malia comparison covers the differences in detail.
Families
Knossos works well for families, but remember the longer journey from Elounda. With younger children:
- keep the Knossos visit to 60 to 90 minutes
- go early
- bring water
- use the Minotaur story to keep them interested
A private transfer or an organised tour is usually easier than three separate buses. See our Knossos with kids guide for more.

Our recommendation
From Elounda, we would rank the options like this:
- Rental car: fastest and most flexible
- Organised tour: easiest if you do not want to drive
- Taxi or private transfer: the easiest door-to-door option, but expensive
- Public bus: cheapest but slowest
The distance is easy; the bus connections are the hard part. If you drive or take a tour, Knossos is a straightforward cultural day trip. If you use buses, plan the return carefully and expect a long day.
Whichever way you go, combine Knossos with the Heraklion Archaeological Museum: the palace in the morning and the original Minoan finds in the afternoon, which gives you a full day of Minoan history for the travel time. If you are staying in Agios Nikolaos instead, see our Agios Nikolaos to Knossos guide.
